Climatic change and extinction risk of two globally threatened Ethiopian endemic bird species

چکیده
Climate change is having profound effects on the distributions of species globally. Trait-based assessments predict that specialist and range-restricted are among those most likely to be at risk extinction from such changes. Understanding individual species’ responses climate therefore critical for informing conservation planning. We use an established Species Distribution Modelling (SDM) protocol describe curious range-restriction globally threatened White-tailed Swallow ( Hirundo megaensis ) a small area in southern Ethiopia. find that, across range modelling approaches, distribution this well described by two climatic variables, maximum temperature dry season precipitation. These same variables have been previously found limit unrelated but closely sympatric Ethiopian Bush-crow Zavattariornis stresemanni ). project future suitability both under scenarios approaches. Both severe within next half century, as 68–84% (for swallow) 90–100% bush-crow) their current ranges predicted become unsuitable. Intensive measures, assisted migration captive-breeding, may only options available safeguard these species. Their projected disappearance wild offers opportunity test reliability SDMs predicting fate Monitoring changes abundance bush-crow particularly tractable because its nests conspicuous visible over large distances.

Quantification of extinction risk: IUCN's system for classifying threatened species.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species was increasingly used during the 1980s to assess the conservation status of species for policy and planning purposes. This use stimulated the development of a new set of quantitative criteria for listing species in the categories of threat: critically endangered, endangered, and vulnerable. These criteria, ...

Global biodiversity loss is disproportionately rapid on islands, where invasive species are a major driver of extinctions. To inform conservation planning aimed at preventing extinctions, we identify the distribution and biogeographic patterns of highly threatened terrestrial vertebrates (classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature) and invasive vertebrates on ~465,000 isla...

متن کاملThe coincidence of climatic and species rarity: high risk to small-range species from climate change.
Why do areas with high numbers of small-range species occur where they do? We found that, for butterfly and plant species in Europe, and for bird species in the Western Hemisphere, such areas coincide with regions that have rare climates, and are higher and colder areas than surrounding regions. Species with small range sizes also tend to occur in climatically diverse regions, where species are...
